He is an Australian military veteran who served in the Australian Infantry with the 7th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment from 2014-2021, and is a Queens Order of Australia Medal (OAM) recipient. A few months after returning from deployment as a crew commander in Afghanistan, he was diagnosed with an incurable and inoperable brain tumor. Since being discharged from the military, he has dedicated his time to raising money for cancer research and reporting from conflict zones. He has spent months on the frontlines of the war in Ukraine.

She often runs and trains with a red painted handprint on her face, dedicated to Indigenous women and girls who have been killed or disappeared.
Countless have gone missing, though numbers are hard to track for a variety of reasons. For example, as NativeHope.org notes, “The National Crime Information Center reports that, in 2016, there were 5,712 reports of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls, though the US Department of Justice’s federal missing person database, NamUs, only logged 116 cases.”

When Americans Are Abducted Overseas (with Jere Van Dyk) | CA #20
Jere Van Dyk is a Pulitzer-nominated journalist and U.S. Army Veteran.
While working as a correspondent for The New York Times, he was embedded with the Mujahideen during their fight with the Soviet Union. He returned to Afghanistan after 9/11 as a CBS News reporter, and in 2006 he became the only journalist to go up into the mountains near the Pakistan border to the site where U.S. Army Ranger, Pat Tillman, was killed. His professional journey took a turn in 2008 — he was traveling through the Tribal Areas of Pakistan, in its borderlands with Afghanistan, and was held captive for 45 days. The incident is recounted in his critically acclaimed book, "Captive: My Time as a Prisoner of the Taliban."
Years later, while researching links among the Haqqani Network, ISIS, the Taliban, al-Qaeda, and the Council on Foreign Relations, he returned to the area to find who was responsible for his kidnapping. This trip inspired his book, "The Trade: My Journey into the Labyrinth of Political Kidnapping."

Ecuador's DOWNFALL: Driven by Cartels and Corrupt Prisons | Change Agents #53
Today on Change Agents, Andy sits down with investigative reporter CD Goette-Luciak to discuss the violent situation in Ecuador.
CD Goette-Luciak is a reporter for the Latin America Advisor, and freelance writer for publications outlets including Vox, The Guardian, The Washington Post, with extensive experience reporting on civil conflict, politics, and corruption from Central America. In 2018, he was even abducted by government forces and expelled from Nicaraguan for his reporting on the administration of Daniel Ortega, who accused CD of working for the CIA.
Recently, he turned his attention to Ecuador, where armed, cartel-affiliated gangs have terrorized the public. In recent weeks, Ecuador has seen a dramatic increase in violence, including the storming of a hospital by 68 gang members and the live broadcast attack on a local TV station by armed men.

He credits a K9 named Remco with saving his life and the lives of several others during the firefight with Taliban fighters, though Remco was killed in the battle.

Escaping the Rohingya Genocide (with Abu Talib) | CA #16
Abu Talib is a member of Burma’s Rohingya refugee. According to the U.S. State Department, “On March 21, 2022, following a rigorous factual and legal analysis, the Secretary determined that members of the Burmese military committed genocide and crimes against humanity against Rohingya. Since the Holocaust, the United States has concluded only seven other times that genocide was committed. This determination marks the eighth.”
After Abu Talib spending weeks at sea, he was able to escape Burma, and became a refugee in Sri Lanka. Today, he has resettled to the United States as a citizen and helps other members of the Rohingya community navigate the citizen process.

The Case That Changed How The Justice System Treats the Innocent - | CA #7
Today on Change Agents, Andy sits down with Andy Wilson and Paula Mitchell from the Los Angeles Innocence Project.
In 1986, Andy was wrongfully convicted of murder. At the age of 31, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole, leaving behind his wife and young daughter.
However, thanks to the help of Paula Mitchell, he was later exonerated and became the founding donor for the LA Innocence Project. The organization works with law enforcement to prevent wrongful convictions in the future and to help free innocent people currently behind bars. Paula Mitchell serves as their director.
